Duffell, K. Gilmore, S. Northrop

South Morang’s poor kicking in the first quarter kept the Redbacks in the game early, but the Lions were always comfortably in front in a match that lacked consistent intensity from the home side in the last match at the Hill for 2009.

Stricko did his best and fairest chances no harm in a best afield performance alongside the silky Will Box, working in an engine room that battled hard all day. Unfortunately consistent help from the attack and defense was not as solid as the coaching staff would have hoped at the start of the day.

Stricko and Boxy were helped out by the ever reliable and fearless Strongy and Nama, while Kane Gilmore put in another encouraging performance that should see him cement his place in the side before finals.

Stevie Northrop was typically hard in a rebound position that was under the pump all game, however his efforts were not enough to thwart a persistent South Morang attack.

The Redbacks must win on Saturday to be comfortable about making the Division 3 finals, as a loss would mean they would be relying on Heidelberg West defeating Reservoir, which is not a position the Club wants to find itself in.

Make sure you get yourself to Pitcher Park for the Parkside match on Sunday and cheer the boys on in what is a mini-final for the Panton Hill Football Club.

TWOS OUTMUSCLED

Panton Hill: 8.5-53
South Morang: 19.14-128

Goal Kickers: A. Solum, E. Rumney

Undermanned against the Lions, the reserve side struggled to stay in touch with the visitors, and the result speaks for itself. Regardless of this, some of the twos players relished the challenge, and Will Wenborn reaped the rewards of a solid couple of months on the training track where he has significantly improved his fitness and claimed a best on ground performance.

Club favourite Matty Cameron continued his run of good form in the ruck, in a dominant showing that could see him elevated to the senior team for Saturday’s match against Parkside, while Kiwi showed no signs of being hampered by the über-serious finger injury that has kept him out of the side in recent weeks.

Hirdy played a great game in his second match for the season, while Solly kicked two goals and Evan Rumney also kicked a ripper and did some great things around the ground to get a mention in the best.

This week is a do-or-die match for the reserves. Win and they may make the finals if Reservoir loses to Heidelberg West. Whatever the case in the other game, the twos will be putting everything on the line in a desperate last gasp attempt to claim 4th spot on the ladder.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

LOCAL SHOWDOWN A REDBACK LET DOWN

Hurstbridge: 12.18-90
Panton Hill: 7.10-52

Goal Kickers: J. Watkins

Hurstbridge always seemed comfortable out in front during this contest that was at times a bit fiery as frustration boiled over on both sides. It was always going to be a hard task taking on the highly-placed Bridges, but don’t try telling that to the Panton Hill players. The boys worked hard but were outclassed, and were clearly disappointed to again go down to the enemy.

Whitcher had his kicking boots on, and managed to kick half the score, earning him best on ground accolades for the black and red spiders, while Strongy had a solid game in the middle and drifted forward to slot a couple of goals for himself.

Meanwhile, down back, Stringer had a high-pressure afternoon, as the defence was continually under pressure, but the super-fist was vital in keeping the opponent to a modest score.

Like Stevie Wonder during a blackout, Stricko and Parko continue to perform, creating a lot of headaches for Hurstbridge throughout the contests across the ground, while Cuddles battled hard and admirably all day in the ruck.

The Club plays host to South Morang on Saturday, which is an opportunity for the hills to put one foot in the finals door, but it will be a tough ask, especially if the local crowd don’t show up and make themselves heard. See you there.

RESERVES LACK DEPTH AND POLISH

Hurstbridge: 16.16-112
Panton Hill: 3.11-29

Goal Kickers: D. Collins, L. Scully, T. Power

Best Players: M. Cameron, N. Grimshaw, T. Power, W. Wenborn, T. Dummett, A. Boyle

While the twos had a fair bit of the play and made a jump out of the blocks early, the majority of the match was dominated by wasted efforts, and the Redbacks broke down when it was time to score. The result means that if the reserves can’t take the points in the next two weeks they will probably finish 5th.

One man who cannot be accused of underperforming lacking desire is Matty Cameron. The fan favourite was in solid form and put in a huge four-quarter effort that set a great example for the players. Unfortunately the vibe didn’t spread as well as the coaching staff would have hoped.

Regular senior players Grimmy and Max Power did what they could to help out across the ground, well assisted by Will Wenborn and Ty Dummett, however the desire of the Hurstbridge players at the contest shone through and a lot of the individual efforts had no direct impact on the match.

Andy Boyle was another player to stand tall against the surge, thwarting many opposition forward entries and shouldering a heavy load on a day he’d probably rather forget.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

HILLERS FLAWED BY FAST FINISHING RESERVOIR

Panton Hill: 14.4-88
Reservoir: 16.8-104

Goal Kickers: B. Strickland, B. Strongman, B. Dummett, D. Pratt

In a bitterly disappointing result, the visitors overcame a 17-point three-quarter time deficit to roll Panton Hill by 16 points in front of a shocked Redback crowd. Reservoir kicked 9.5 to Panton Hill’s 4.2 in the final quarter to post the upset. The result means that the Spiders are now even with South Morang and Reservoir on points and are in danger of slipping out of the top 4 if they drop any of the upcoming matches at the pointy end of the season.

In an often fiery encounter it was the recently returned Huffy who led the way for the home side, putting his body on the line at every opportunity and getting plenty of reward through the middle of the ground. Parko also had a good game, and appears to be coming into some form at the right time of the year.

Stricko and Strongy provided their typical leadership and hardness at the contest, and could be looking at a 1&2 finish in the best and fairest stakes for 2009, although not necessarily in that order.

Big Brendo Dummett is going from strength to strength after coming into the side mid-July and is able to play key roles either as a target or nullifier, his strength, size and smarts being valuable assets to the side. Pratty also had a good day, although like the others would possibly trade a spot in the best for a chance to replay that final quarter again.

Each of the last three matches have now become vitally important, and the beginning of the final chapter will take place in the local showdown with Hurstbridge this Saturday (@ Hurstbridge). The match will hold more significance than other recent encounters for both sides, so you don’t want to miss it.

HARD-WORKING TWOS LET THEMSELVES DOWN

Panton Hill: 12.10-82
Reservoir: 14.13-97

Goal Kickers: A. Anderson 2, J. Callaghan 2, D. Collins, M. Cameron, P. Strongman, T. Gilmore, M. Layt, R. Agnew, J. Poyser, J. Ball

Best Players: P. Strongman, J. Ball, A. Anderson, R. Agnew, T. Coleman, L. Walsh

This was a good game from the two’s, however they let themselves down with a few undisciplined acts over the course of the match that resulted directly in Reservoir goals. The Hills ultimately ran out of time before the final siren to peg back the difference, and were visibly gutted by the result.

Strongy played his final match of 2009 like a man with nothing to lose, and as a result was the most damaging on-baller in the red and black. Strongy is heading overseas prior to the Hurstbridge match, and for this reason the boys had wanted to send him away in style.

Josh Ball had another great match to follow up a watershed performance against Heidelberg West, playing smart attacking footy and sharing the ball around with his mates, while Adam Anderson played one of his best matches in two seasons for the Hills, providing an important focal point up forward after an early injury to Ty Gilmore.

Ryan Agnew continues to improve and again played a key role for the Redbacks, in a strong and confident performance, with Trenta and Walshy providing typical reliability out of defence and through the middle of the ground.

It was a shame that the fast-finishing Hills couldn’t get over the line late in the game, as they had dominated the play for much of the day, but lapses in concentration and discipline pushed the four points out of reach. As a result the Hills find themselves a game out of the final four, and simply cannot afford to throw away any more matches. There will be some players looking to redeem themselves against Hurstbridge, while others will simply want to keep the finals within reach.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

HILLS PROSPER IN A SCRAPPY MATCH

Heidelberg West: 8.11-59
Panton Hill: 12.18-90

Goal Kickers: B. Strongman, S. Gunn, G. Mc Auliffe, S. Walker

The first round of division 3 action ever in the NFL didn’t exactly deliver a hugely awesome match that people had hoped, however despite some average foot skills the Redbacks posted a comfortable win at the ground that is sometimes mistaken for being two grounds.

The Hillers maintained control for the majority of the game, but onlookers probably felt that the final margin of 31 points could have been a lot more, had the foot skills of the side been a bit more polished. Nonetheless a win is a win, and that’s certainly positive.

Nama has slotted back into the red and black seemingly with ease, and put in a best on ground performance against the Hawks. This is an excellent effort for a bloke that only showed up at the club for the first time about 5 weeks ago. The creators of the FaceBook group “Get Nat Duffell back up the hill” must be rapt.

Whitcher continues his run of dominant form, and was one of few people who displayed consistent skill throughout the game, bobbing up all over the place to create havoc for the opposition, well assisted by the ever-reliable Ben Strongman and a young Gunn named Simon. Stringer and Snappy also did a great job in defence, combining for a total of 76 fists (this is not confirmed).

The boys have a very important battle this week against Reservoir, with a win going a long way to confirming the Hills finals chances. The match will be played at Panton Hill and we’d love to see you there!

RESERVES GO THROUGH THE MOTIONS

Heidelberg West: 8.8-56
Panton Hill: 15.12-102

Goal Kickers: T. Belcher, R. Agnew, T. Dunn, T. Gilmore

This match had many parallels to the senior game in that it wasn’t the greatest effort that we’ve seen from the twos, but they still managed to come away with a pretty comfortable win after West had a real crack in the last quarter and avoided a blow-out result.

Vossy was at his bustling best as he burst through packs and provided a strong link through the middle of the ground, which is something that seemed to spur Belch on as he did the same.

Matty Cameron was also great, sharing the ruck duties and playing different key big-man roles at each end of the ground. Matty also kicked his first goal for Panton Hill following a 50m penalty much to the delight of the Redback bench.

Rags did a grouse job at filling in for Walshy and Andy B at full back, and got a lot of the ball, often giving it away to the dash of Timmy Dunn who created quite a few attacking plays. Ty Gilmore was handy in the forward line, chipping in six big ones.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

FAST FINISHING REDBACKS FALL SHORT

Panton Hill: 12.10-82
Lower Plenty: 14.12-96

Goal Kickers: B. In conditions that were again blustery – and very dry underfoot – the Redbacks did take it up to the visitors in the 2nd and 4th quarters, but unfortunately only a 4-quarter effort could have guaranteed victory to the Panton Hill boys.

A barnstorming 7-goal final term from the Redbacks had the home crowd pretty hyped up about the possibility of an upset, however Lower Plenty were able to hold their nerve and save the match by 14 points.

The holy trinity of Boxy, Strongy, and Stricko again shone on a see-sawing day – dominating for the spiders around the contests and at times keeping the home side in the game at times when Lower threatened to charge away earlier in the match.

In the forward line it was the combination of Gilly and Whitcher keeping their team on the board, sharing in 9 goals, while at the other end of the ground Stringer had his work cut out but was at times very effective in quelling the constant forward surges of the Bears.

Whilst the result is of course disappointing, the side will draw on the positives, especially the ability to push their opponent right to the final siren.

TWOS FAIL TO FIRE UP FORWARD

Panton Hill: 1.6-12
Lower Plenty: 14.21-105

Goal Kickers: J. Unfortunately the hills constantly broke down at the half-forward line, after getting much of the play, and really restricting the Lower Plenty attack in the first half in particular.

Once the away team started to pull away in the later stages of the game the Redbacks went into their shells, and Lower Plenty were able to capitalise in that late lack of intensity, with a barrage of scoring shots.

Walshy was excellent in playing through a back complaint, and still dominating his opponents in the backline, well assisted by Snappy, while Big Chris (‘German’) showed that he hasn’t lost the form that he displayed early in the year.

JB worked very hard all day all over the ground, and was well aided by Strongy and stand-in captain Trenta, while Matty Cameron never gave up in the middle of the ground as a ruckman and tall marking option.

Regardless of the many individual efforts on display, the overall team effort was sub-par, and this is something that the boys are very keen to reverse before the upcoming match against Heidelberg West.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

HILLS OUT-MUSCLED IN WINDY CONDITIONS

Macleod: 24.16-160
Panton Hill: 4.0-24

Goal Kickers: J. Gunn

It had to be the windiest Saturday arvo in ages. It was the grand opening of the ‘new’ Macleod ground and Mother Nature was on hand to make things interesting, with a gale blowing almost directly towards the big sticks at the Heidelberg end. Noodles had to wear three head-bands just to keep balance.

Conditions aside, it was always going to be a mammoth task to see the undermanned hillers really take it up to the ladder leaders, who would be favoured to take the field in yet another grand final this season. The difference in class certainly showed on the field and the scoreboard, although the efforts of Benny Gill, Stricko and Josh Braunton were very encouraging as they brought a lot of enthusiasm to the contest.

Will Box was solid, whilst Browny built on his recent great form to get another mention in the best for the day, while Gunny battled hard to try and get things happening for the Redbacks.

One thing that was definitely a positive on such a windy day was the straight kicking of the Panton Hill side – four goals straight. Of course the visitors would have loved to have had plenty more shots, but the dominance of the Kangaroos simply did not allow for many forward 50 entries.

Next week the Hillers return home for a crack at Lower Plenty, who have just come off a stirring win against Mernda. This will be the final match before the division splits in two, with Panton Hill playing the remainder of the season in Division 3 with 5 other sides – Hurstbridge, South Morang, Reservoir, Parkside and Heidelberg West.

Keep your eyes on the latest news blog for the release of the remainder of the 2009 fixture later this week.

TWOS WIN BACK SOME RESPECT

Macleod: 10.18-78
Panton Hill: 2.10-22

Goal Kickers: J. Gilliland, J. Callaghan

Best Players: P. Strongman, B. Dummett, A. Boyle, M. Cameron, A. Miller, J. Gilliland

In all honesty this is a match that the visitors thought they would absolutely dominate. Following the previous week’s debacle against Mernda, and the fact that Macleod are a top team, maybe this optimism was some-what valid.

However, full credit to the boys as they rallied to keep the scoreboard honest for three and a bit quarters – again undermanned. The endeavour showed by the side was greatly appreciated by the coach, who was proud of their efforts.

Certainly, Twelve scoring shots and an excellent last line of defence was not what the Kangaroos were expecting, and they were visibly frustrated throughout the game. Paul Strongman led the way well for the Redbacks, and was aided well by the first-match hero in Big Brendan Dummett, who brushed opponents aside like a wrestler fending off snot-nosed kids in the line for ice creams.

Andy Boyle was under a lot of pressure during the match, playing a key defensive role, and certainly rose to the challenge, well aided at ground level by Milsey. Matty Cameron did a great solo job in the ruck, while Gilligan had a solid game after having a few weeks off mid-season.

Get up to the Hill this weekend by noon to rev the boys up as they aim to get back at the Lower Plenty side that punished them last year.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

INJURIES MOUNT AS HILLS HAVE A FORGETTABLE DAY

Mernda: 22.16-148
Panton Hill: 6.7-43

Goal Kickers: B. Gunn

It was another disappointing day for the spiders, who couldn’t match the skill of the Mernda side, in a loss that was compounded by injuries, both during the game and those that occurred the week prior.

It was a bit of a new-look Redbacks side that took the field as a result of previous injuries and the swinging of the axe at the selection table. One great positive was the form of Nama, who doesn’t appear to have lost any polish during his season-and-a-half away from the Hill. Nama was picked by the coaching staff as fourth-best on ground for the away side, which will no doubt be a confidence boost.

For the remainder of the best, it was familiar faces, with Strongy, Whitcher and Boxy flying the flag with some assistance from Pratty and Gunny throughout the match.

The result means that it is almost impossible (still a mathematical chance) for the Hills to avoid relegation to Division 3 by jumping that purple line, Biggest Loser style (click the graphic below - and I know, it's a yellow line in that show).

Unfortunately it would appear that both points and percentage are against the boys, however all is not lost, as the side will be in a great position to have a crack at their first September in many years.

TERRIBLE TWOS

Mernda: 22.10-142
Panton Hill: 0.4-4

Best Players: S. Northrop, A. Anderson, G. Carr, J. Braunton, K. Jones, L. Walsh

Terrible is a bit harsh, the title does have a fair ring to it though – and the match did bring back some painful memories of seasons past. The reserves team were depleted in numbers and out-classed considerably, to the point that they couldn’t score a goal all day.

The task was always going to be hard against a good side in Mernda, when many of the regular players gained senior call-ups and key injuries occurred throughout the match, limiting rotation options to the point that tired players simply couldn’t get a rest.

As with the seniors, it was not all doom and gloom. The ever-dominant presence of Steve Northrop was again on display, while Adam Anderson played possibly his best game of the year, which is handy going into the business end of the season.

Grant Carr was a monster in the middle, doing some great tap ruck work and following up his efforts, while Josh Braunton and Kalev Jones showed a bit of class and determination that indicated that they are still hungry to play senior footy.

Lucas Walsh had a few stints on the ball and looked very comfortable with a bit more room to move and be creative, seeming to enjoy the freedom away from the last line.

Let’s get behind both teams on Saturday when they take on Macleod at the grand opening of the new ground in Rosanna. It’d be great to be able to spoil the party.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

CRUNCH TIME AT THE HILL

Panton Hill: 6.9-45
Whittlesea: 24.14-158

Goal Kickers: B. Woods

Saturday’s drubbing at the hands of Whittlesea signalled the Hill’s second heavy loss in consecutive weeks at home. In a week where the axe was swung at the selection table there were some new faces in the line up raring to go and make a good impression on the coaching staff. While there were some good performances and memorable moments for those individuals, the team unfortunately did not function as well as everyone had hoped or expected.

A couple of the more familiar faces in Stricko and Boxy were the best players in the guts for the Redbacks, and tried at every contest to get the Hills forward in typically reliable fashion. Browny, Whitcher and Strongy also put in the solid performances that they are known for.

Ricky Woods returned to the side after a few weeks in the twos, and managed to kick a couple of goals, while Noodles kicked a goal and provided some dash in his first senior match in the red and black.

With only three games remaining before the creation of Division 3, the task is starting to look unlikely for the Hills to avoid the mid-year relegation by jumping the purple line by the end of round 13, as the image below demonstrates (click it to enlarge).

Ladder after round 10:

Even if the Redbacks cannot remain in Division 2 the focus will undoubtedly be to place highly for a red-hot crack at the Division 3 finals series, and the only way to do that is to keep playing hard and winning a few more matches, so rain hail or shine, get to the games and support our boys.

ERRORS COST RESERVES THEIR 3rd WIN

Panton Hill: 6.6-42
Whittlesea: 8.11-59

Goal Kickers: T. Gilmore 2, T. Dunn, J. Hendry, D. Collins, S. Northrop
Best Players: S. Northrop, M. Lawn, M. Poulton, N. Duffell, A. Boyle, L. Scully

This is a game that was not decided until there were about 2 minutes left in the match when the Eagles kicked a late sealer against our twos who were committed and eager, but made some silly mistakes that may have actually cost the 4 points.

Panton Hill had Whittlesea rattled, as they had expected to dominate the contest from the outset. What actually transpired was an epic struggle that was at times very much like watching a game of tennis - just with a lot more players and different sporting instruments and rules.

Regardless of the differences, there was a defensive-style battle out on the ground that lasted the full distance. Unfortunately for the Redbacks, their relentless pressure at the contest was undone by a few errors in decision making that probably kept the Eagles in the game, and when the tired legs crept in it was Whittlesea that managed a couple of late majors to clinch victory.

One man who did everything he possibly could to save the match for the Hills was Steve Northorp, who managed to get on the end of most of the Whittlesea attacking plays, and rebounded tirelessly out of the backline, pushing through the pain barrier at times due to an ongoing injury. Steve was clearly best on ground for the spiders, and certainly gave his all.

Lawny saw what Steve was serving up and did the same through the middle of the ground and was well aided by Stumpy and returning Redback Numa Duffell, who almost took the mark of the year – so much so that this reporter instinctively exclaimed “holy [expletive]!” My sincere apologies to the Church and any other offended parties. Numa dropped the attempted mark, but it looked great.

Andy Boyle is continuing his solid run at full-back, and had another great performance on the weekend, while first-year player Leighroy showed more enthusiasm than a cat in a mouse factory (the place where they make mice) and provided excellent forward pressure that rubbed off on several players.

The coaching staff were of course disappointed, but pleased with the endeavour that was shown by the group. Let’s hope that the intensity doesn’t drop off, as this weeks coming match will be big for the Redbacks as they try to make up for a shellacking that Mernda dealt last season at their home ground. Be there by noon to show your support.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

REDBACKS FALL BACK TO EARTH WITH A THUD

Panton Hill: 10.8-68
Fitzroy Stars: 26.18-174

Goal Kickers: B. Lyngcoln, D. Strickland

Round 9 was a crunch round for many sides, especially for Panton Hill, as the ‘drop-zone’ for Division 3 starts to take shape at the bottom of the Division 2 ladder. Proceedings started well enough up at the Hill for the home team, as the first quarter was very even, however after quarter time the Stars stepped up the tempo and dominated the Redbacks, who just couldn’t keep up.

Justin Whitcher was typically reliable throughout the match, and other familiar faces in Skyesy, Strongy, Boxy, Nuts and Stricko tried hard to get the team up and about, however there were too many below average performances from the next tier of players that saw the senior side overwhelmed by a classier and more committed team.

The result will undoubtedly raise a few eyebrows after the previous fortnight’s performances against two lesser-lights of the competition. What this means for Panton Hill is that relegation mid-season is very possible if things don’t change. The side is currently 11th on the ladder, two wins and percentage behind Parkside, who are 10th.

The next month of football is all that the Redbacks have to prove themselves if they believe they are up to it. After the Lower Plenty game in less than a month’s time the division will split. The ladder below (click image to enlarge) illustrates the task ahead – the thick purple line represents the cut-off, with teams below it after round 13 forming division 3. It is vital that the players and supporters acknowledge the road ahead, and get together to have a real crack at taking 8th spot in the next month.

TWOS MAKE IT BACK TO BACK WINS

Panton Hill: 14.11-95
Fitzroy Stars: 9.9-63

Goal Kickers: T. Gilmore 6, R. Woods 3, D. Bee 2, M. Poulton, D. Walton, J. Poyser

Best Players: J. Ballock, D. Bee, R. Woods, M. Lawn, M. Layt, S. Northrop

The news was better for the reserves on the weekend, with some great team-orientated football spelling another victory for Jono’s troops. There was a new sense of self belief about the side that was particularly encouraging, and the result was one to savour. The reserves have not won back to back games for a few years at the very least.

Several players put their hand up for a possible senior recall this week after dominant performances. Most notably, it was JB (aka Hi-Fi, Brawshaw, J-Balls) in the middle of the ground, who got plenty of the ball and directed traffic very well, often instigating forward surges that resulted in goals.

Dom and Ricky were also great contributors, chipping in wherever they could and sharing 5 goals in the process, which was very handy. Lawny, Noodles and Steve were also very committed to the contest, and provided attacking moves that rattled the Stars to the point that they couldn’t stay in the game.

It’s worth mentioning that Ty Gilmore was on track to equalling his 10 goal haul from the previous week, however he came off the field midway through the match on 6 goals, after being felled by a rogue Fitzroy shirt-front that was as questionable as 7-Eleven hot dogs at 3am.

It was a very even contribution from all players, and the team should be proud of their efforts, and be raring to go at home again this week to Whittlesea, who were soundly beaten last week by Diamond Creek in their reserves match. Be there by noon on Saturday to support our boys!

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

12 GOALS FROM GILL AS HILLS BURY HAWKS

Heidelberg West: 8.3-51

Panton Hill: 22.22-154

Goal Kickers: B. Strickland, J. Lyngcoln, K. Jones

Panton Hill have now won two matches in a row, both away from home, and are looking primed for a charge up the ladder over the second part of the season. It was a lop-sided affair in the end, as the Hawks struggled to maintain offensive pressure and break the lines, often turning it over and being punished by the Redback on-ballers and forwards. First and foremost was the contribution of Benny Gill from the goal square.

On a day where the big targets dominated in both Panton Hill sides, Gilly kicked a bag. In fact, with a total of 12 goals, you could say that he kicked a bag in each half, in a performance that would have had the great leading forwards like Tony Lockett and Jason Dunstall grinning from ear to ear. Gilly had a familiar partner in crime, with Whitcher bobbing up to kick four goals of his own.

Of course, in order for our forwards to be so damaging it took a strong and accurate performance from the midfield brigade, led by clear B&F favourite – Captain Benny Strongman. As usual Strongy was everywhere, and worked hard to win the contests and put the ball to the Redbacks advantage. Strongy was well assisted by Stricko and Nuts around the ground, with the trio collectively bullying the ball forward and taking no prisoners.

Kalev Jones continued to build on his good game against Reservoir, taking some solid marks around the ground and providing another hardened body to the contests. With the win Panton Hill has climbed to 11th on the league ladder, and is still a mathematical chance at avoiding relegation into Division 3 on the 25th of July.

The side will need to string together a few more wins over the next month to remain in Div 2 contention with the teams ranked 7-12 all in the fight to remain in the higher competition. Come along on Saturday to the Panton Hill ground to support the boys as they take on the Fitzroy Stars and attempt to keep the victories rolling.

RESERVES SMASH HAWKS FOR MAIDEN VICTORY

Heidelberg West: 5.2-32
Panton Hill: 22.15-147

Goal Kickers: T. Woods, R. Fry, M. Lawn, M. Layt

Saturdays match against West was the time that everything seemed to fall into place for the twos. After weeks of demoralising losses, including several close ones against quality opposition, it was time evident that the boys were ready to pounce on any opportunity from the opening bounce.

And bounce they did. The first quarter effort of seven goals was not only the side’s highest first quarter score for the year, it was bigger than many of the full time scores that the magoos have posted so far in 2009. With a confidence boosting start like that, it was hard to see the Hawks working back into the game.

With the exception of a few patches later in the game where some of the Redbacks tried to do too many individual things, it was a resounding team success, and a powerful way to bring home the first win of the season.

Ty Gilmore played the role of full forward for the entire game, and the strapping Panton Hill local did not disappoint his coach, kicking 10 goals mostly from set shots in a dominant performance that delighted the Redback supporters and players.

The side had winners all over the ground, with Ryan Agnew putting in his best performance to date, and stifling many attacking presses from the home team and providing great rebound off the half back line, linking up with the likes of Ricky Woods and Russ Fry who commanded the corridor with ease.

Lawny and Noodles also worked hard all day on the wings and through the guts, providing plenty of physicality to the contest and driving the boys forward at every opportunity. Coach Jono Manzoney was rapt with the team performance and stated after the game that every player on the ground pulled their weight and played their role well.

Saturday will be a big test for the twos to see if they can overcome the Stars, and will go into the game with confidence after the big win. The corresponding match from last year was only decided by a couple of kicks with Fitzroy getting the win, so get there by noon to support the lads.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

SHARP-SHOOTING REDBACKS POST MAIDEN 2009 VICTORY

Reservoir: 7.13-55
Panton Hill: 11.5-71

Goal Kickers: B. Coleman

Senior Coach Gary Ramsay jumped so high when the final siren sounded at Reservoir that he head butted a low-flying jet, which removed some hair from the top of his head. After a long ride his troops had finally posted a win, and it was evident that a huge weight had lifted from Rambo’s shoulders. The feeling was reflected throughout the whole Redback camp, with everyone, supporters included, cramming into the rooms for the post match speech and team song.

The match was a great team effort, and was typified by effective use of the ball, and accurate finishing from the team that has sometimes slaughtered past opportunities with unfortunate finishing. The boys were also this time able to maintain the good work right up to the final siren, which is a massive improvement on past efforts.

Will Box led the way, working like crazy all over the ground to quell any attacking plays that Reservoir made, and was highly effective in the type of best on ground performance that he has become known for at Panton Hill. Boxy was well assisted by a committed Nathan Smith who also found the time to slot three cheeky goals, while full forward Benny Gill was a dead-eye dick around the sticks, kicking half of the Redback score with six of his own. Stricko was another who took the match by the scruff of the neck, pushing the boys into attack with every half chance he had.

Stringer, like most weeks, was very effective in defence, and played a typically solid role, while the elevated Trenta Coleman played one of his best senior games for Panton Hill, running around like a nut and displaying great disposal by foot.

The win lifts The Hills above Reservoir, also with one win into 12th position, and allows them to enter the mid season break with some confidence and time to rest before they take on bottom of the table Heidelberg West on 13 June.

RESERVES WASTE THEIR BEST OPPORTUNITY YET

Reservoir: 10.15-75
Panton Hill: 2.14-26

Goal Kickers: J. Ballock, R. Woods
Best Players: D. Walton, A. Boyle, S. Walker, D. Belcher, M. Cameron, J. Poyser

The seconds entered Saturday’s match with plenty of confidence that they could break onto the winner’s list for the first time against a team that has experienced a very similar run in the first half of the season. In the absence of leaders such as Ty Dummett, Paul Strongman, and the elevated Trent Coleman, the Hills needed a lift from other seasoned players in the side. Kiwi was the one person in particular to lift the team, in what was probably his best performance on a football field since switching from rugby in 2008.

Kiwi was everywhere, working from contest to contest to get the ball forward, however did not have enough support in close, with most efforts counter-acted by Reservoir who managed to find their way forward much more effectively than Panton Hill. Kiwi was clearly the thorn in the home team’s side, and went down heavily in a head-high collision in the final term, which resulted in him making an early exit on the stretcher and an ambulance. Thankfully he was OK and was released from hospital later that evening.

The backline was under siege all game, and the last line in Boyley, Snappy and Belcher worked very hard to keep things from getting too ugly, and supporting their team mates at all costs. In Belcher’s case he took things a step further in a heated moment and tried to spear-tackle an opponent that was at least 50kg bigger than him. It was admirable, but he probably wishes he didn’t.

Matty Cameron and Justin Poyser also gave their all around the ground, but ultimately the clean possessions and disposals went to the opposition, and that was the story of the day. The twos will regroup and look forward to the upcoming clash with Heidelberg West after the Queen's Birthday break.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

THAT FINAL TERM AGAIN

Panton Hill: 13.9-87
Watsonia: 16.17-113

Goal Kickers: B. Mc Auliffe, J. Lyngcoln, S. Sykes

Last Saturday’s match had plenty of build up, and was to be a tightly fought contest – which it was for most of the afternoon. However, Panton Hill couldn’t get that 4th quarter monkey of its back again, in a loss that was all too familiar for the local crowd.

The Redbacks took a six point lead into the last change, and with the home crowd were well fancied to take the match by the scruff of the neck. Unfortunately for the Hills it was Watsonia that responded to the crowd’s noises, and kicked six goals to one in another forgettable final term.

Continuing his scintillating form of the last few weeks, Parko was adjudged best on ground for his tireless work around the ground, creating play and carrying the ball well for the Redbacks, quite possibly taking influence from his Vice Captain, Will Box, who was also highly effective and appears to be not far off his best form.

Benny Clark and Stringer were doing their best to keep the opposition honest, and fought hard to nullify Watsonia’s efforts, while it was a couple of experienced campaigners in Nuts and Sykesy who offered Parko and Boxy great support around the ground, with Nuts also finding the time to slot three majors.

In a team full of Bens some praise should also be given to Mr Gill who punted four goals for the home side, to continue his run of efficient forward-line activity.

In 13th position on the ladder, and three wins and percentage off 8th place it will be a tough ask from here to avoid relegation into Division 3 after round 13, however that is certainly going to be the ongoing goal for the remainder of the season. That quest begins this coming Saturday at Reservoir, with the home side only registering the one win themselves for the season. Put in the effort and support our boys.

WAYWARD SHOOTING COSTS RESERVES THE POINTS

Panton Hill: 7.17-59
Watsonia: 10.8-68

Goal Kickers: R. Power

The twos would be pretty filthy with themselves this week after they squandered early attacking plays and at one stage in the second quarter had 1.10 posted on the scoreboard. It ended up costing them the match as they went down by nine points to a Watsonia team that by contrast made the most of their forward line attacks.

On a positive note, this was the first time in many weeks that the twos did not fade away and get overrun in the final term, outscoring the visitors three goals to one in that quarter. Unfortunately it was not enough for the Redbacks, who, like the senior team, are without a win after six matches.

The result was no fault of Grant Carr, who was superb in ruck all match, winning the majority of the tap-outs, and providing an excellent marking option and link throughout the middle of the ground. Ty Gilmore was another to have a good game, in what was possibly his best match from the first six rounds.

New face at the Club Tim Dunn has stepped up quickly after his first couple of matches and provided some good run through the middle, while Walshy was typically solid for the Hills in defence.

Dom Bee and Max Power were also handy players, and will be pushing for senior selection this week, along with crowd favourite Ricky Woods who played a good cameo in the twos and kicked two goals.

Much like the firsts, the reserves will go into Saturday’s match against Reservoir with some confidence of chalking up win number 1 for 2009.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

HILLS SUFFER WORST LOSS OF 2009

Epping: 25.18-168
Panton Hill: 6.4-40

Goal Kickers: B. Gunn

Perhaps it was the shock of playing away from the spider’s nest, maybe the players heads were in the clouds, or perhaps they just hadn’t all had their Wheat Bix on Saturday. No matter how you look at it, the less that’s said about this one, the better.

After a fairly tight first quarter the Epping team seized total control of the match, scoring 22 goals over the last three quarters while the Redbacks looked on like a struggling marathon runner losing Mona’s silhouette on the horizon. Unfortunately the overall desire and commitment to the contest just wasn’t there, and the Hills appeared beaten somewhere during the middle part of the game.

As has been the case in previous weeks, the result was no fault of Captain Strongman, Danny Strickland or Justin Whitcher, who continue to deliver consistent four quarter efforts for the Redbacks, while Nuts, Benny Clark and Gunny pushed hard all day, however could not find enough support across the ground from their team mates.

Ben Gill made the most of a bad situation, managing to kick half of Panton Hill’s goals, however finding other match highlights was tough from a forgettable day for Redback fans.

Coach Rambo was understandably disappointed with the team’s performance, and acknowledged that the players have a lot of work to do to try and understand how they were beaten so easily, and where the passion went on Saturday.

The soul-searching will have to end before the coming weekend, as the Redbacks host the Saints up at the Hill. Many players will know that they are playing for their positions this week – provided they are able to get a game. Stay true to the jumper and get up to Panton Hill this Saturday and support your club.

TWOS SIGNS MORE PROMISING

Epping: 14.15-99
Panton Hill: 4.8-32

Goal Kickers: Unknown (watch this space)
Best Players: J. Hendry, G. Carr, M. Poulton, T. Gilmore, M. Layt, D. Bee

In the corresponding reserves match last year the Epping team were supremely dominant, winning by 252 points. Panton Hill kicked one goal that day (and Daniel Belcher played like the Last Mohican to be BOG).

The fallout from a loss like that can probably be compared to the outcome of Michael Jackson challenging Mr T to an Ultimate Fighting Champion match with Eddie Murphy providing humiliating live commentary. You can bet Jacko wouldn’t be voluntarily moon-walking into any fighting arenas after that.

The Panton Hill Football Club doesn’t roll that way however. The Redbacks came to play, with a few players in their first match for the Hills looking to prove themselves. The result was an intense and at times tight tussle, in which the visitors stuck with the Epping team for the first three quarters, only down by 3 goals at three-quarter time, much to the delight of Reserves Coach Jono Manzoney.

Unfortunately for the twos, the dream result couldn’t be reached, and the familiar final term fade out again sucked the life out of the contest, and as Epping kicked 7 goals in that term, the final margin did no justice to the effort of the inexperienced Redback side.

Jason Hendry played his first game in the black and red prison bars, and proved to be quite a find, getting a lot of the ball and providing great team-lifting contests, which earned him BOG for the losing team. Grant Carr battled typically hard in the ruck, while Stumpy continued to impress in his second game of the season.

Young first year players Ty Gilmore and Noodles also put some smiles on their team mate’s faces, with solid performances that could be considered their best yet, whilst Dom Bee again pressed his claim for senior selection. Several other first year players also impressed in their first hit-out and will be pushing for selection again this week if they are fit.

The much-closer-than-last-year match should give the boys some confidence going into this week’s match against Watsonia, who are a team that were rattled by an undermanned Hills team in 2008. The Panton Hill reserves will have a strong belief that they can put the first win on the board in round 6, so be there by noon on Saturday and show your colours for the Redbacks.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

REDBACKS GO DOWN IN TIGHT LOCAL SHOWDOWN

Panton Hill: 12.12-84
Hurstbridge: 13.13-91

Goal Kickers: B. Gill 5, J. Whitcher 3, D. Strickland, J. Lyngcoln, J. Braunton, T. Power

Best Players: G. Mc Auliffe, B. Strongman, R. Parkinson, D. Strickland, S. Sykes, K. Jones

It’s the biggest rivalry in Panton Hill football. At least once a season for many years the Redbacks have fought in tough contests against the mob at the end of the train line, with the winner claiming the Ben Friley Trophy. Hurstbridge are always just as fired up as our boys, and the games often bring out the best in both sides.

This time around it was the Hurstbridge boys who reclaimed the bragging rights, with the match in the balance until the final siren. It was a very see-sawing affair, with both teams wrestling the momentum at different stages in the match, with the Hills down by three goals at the three quarter time break, which set the scene for a big final quarter at our home ground.

As the end of the match drew closer the Redbacks had regained the momentum with a few quick goals and were threatening to take the points deep into time on when a chain of disappointing events led to the Hurstbridge side putting the result beyond doubt with a quick goal in the final minute as the Panton Hill boys looked on helplessly. When the siren blew with the Hills going down by 7 points the team and its supporters were visibly gutted, as another huge chance had gone begging.

As to be expected in such a close and fierce match, there were many individual performances to be highlighted. None more so than crowd favourite Stringer, who was best on for the Hills, providing a steady super-fist in the backline without which the Redbacks may have found the game beyond reach much earlier in the day. Equally effective was (guess who) Captain Ben who continues to lead by example though the middle of the ground.

Another steady performer, young playmaker Parko worked hard all day in driving the Panton Hill side forward and showing off some silky skills, while Danny Strickland proved that his previous performance was no flash in the pan. Expect more tough outings from Stricko in the future.

Shane Sykes was another experienced campaigner who provided an honest contribution, whilst 2009 new-comer Kalev Jones repaid the coaches faith with his best performance of the year thus far.

It’s also worth mentioning the useful goal kicking return from Benny Gill, who casually slotted five majors for the home side, and kept the Hills in the game when Hurstbridge threatened to pull away.

Our boys will be under the pump on Saturday when they travel to Epping to face a Blues team seething after a loss to Diamond Creek last week. Panton Hill remain at 12th on the league ladder, with just a relatively healthy percentage keeping them ahead of Reservoir and Heidelberg West.

RESERVES FAIL TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP

Panton Hill: 8.7-55
Hurstbridge: 14.13-97

Goal Kickers: M. Poulton 4, D. Collins 2, D. Bee 2

Best Players: M. Poulton, D. Collins, T. Coleman, R. Fry, K. Gilmore, D. Bee

With Jono unable to attend Saturday’s showdown with Hurstbridge, senior player and assistant coach Justin Whitcher stepped into the role of reserves coach for the day with assistance from sidelined skipper Ty Dummett. The side handled this possible distraction well, jumping out of the blocks in the first quarter, to give the side belief for much of the game.

However, the Redbacks reserves ran out of legs later in the match, and what could have been a win turned in to a sizable loss that did no justice to the hard working Hills. The final quarter was again the side’s Achilles heel, with Hurstbridge finding easy routes to goal and effectively doubling their score after three quarter time.

The players were buoyed by some great individual performances up forward, with Stumpy kicking four goals in his first game for the year, also earning him a best on ground nomination. Stumpy was well supported by Big Dylan who has improved in his role as a major focal point close to goal.

Trenta and Russ Fry led the team through the other parts of the ground with Trent nullifying dangerous opponents and Russell providing many attacking moves into the forward 50. Stand-in skipper Kane Gilmore also provided good support and leadership in the packs, while Dom responded well to a three-quarter time rocket and was easily the best player for the Redbacks in the final quarter, pushing his case for a senior recall.

A trip to Epping on Saturday will prove to be difficult as the reserves team find themselves in a similar position to the seniors, in 12th position on the ladder, with figures of 0-4, facing a Blues team looking to rebound after a loss to Diamond Creek. Make sure you make the trip this week and be at the ground early to give the boys the support they need.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

FINAL QUARTER BLITZ DERAILS REDBACKS

Panton Hill: 19.8-122
Parkside: 21.17-143

Goal Kickers: J. A barmy Panton Hill Saturday afternoon set the scene for a fast-paced goal fest, but unfortunately the hosts fell short at the final hurdle.

This wasn’t the case earlier in the match, when the Redbacks stacked on nine goals to two in the second term to take the lead after a lean first term. It was an old-fashioned see-sawing shootout that was well led on the scoreboard by goal sneak Justin Whitcher (6 goals) and Benny Gill (5 goals).

Around the ground it was the young combination of Simon Gunn (BOG) and Robbie Parkinson who both played possibly their best games for the club, linking up well, marking strongly, and moving the ball quickly and accurately. Parko may have been in line for best-on before he was controversially put down in the club room pocket by an allegedly late heavy knock in defence during the third quarter.

Typically reliable in the middle, Captain Ben Strongman also fared in the best and early in the season will be confident of being capable of achieving back-to-back best and fairest awards, while Danny Strickland looked comfortable after crossing from Eltham at the end of 2008.

The end result was again disappointing for the Panton Hill team, who have been working hard on the training track during the week. The boys were ropable with themselves after the match, and no doubt they’ll want to play like a team possessed against the old rival Hurstbridge this Saturday, which presents a massive opportunity to turn fortunes around on home turf. The Redbacks currently sit at 11th on the league ladder after three matches.

RESERVES FADE AWAY IN THE LAST

Panton Hill: 8.11-59
Parkside: 14.11-95

Goal Kickers: D. Collins 3, R. Fry, M. Layt, T. Coleman, T. Gilmore

Best Players: L. Walsh, S. Northrop, R. Fry, R. Agnew, D. Collins, J. Poyser

The signs were promising early in this match as well, with the Redbacks keeping in touch with the Parkside team for the first three quarters of the match. Unfortunately the Hills seconds just don’t seem to be able to close the deal, and will want to reverse this trend quickly if they want to get onto the winners’ list.

There were a few positives to be taken out of the game, as a number of players impressed the coaching staff. In particular, it was Walshy, who is seemingly back to his best, putting in a BOG performance. The blonde spider did it all on Saturday, starting off at the usual position of full-back, taking goal saving marks and dashing out of defence, he was later moved up the ground and was used as a rebound half-back, driving the ball deep into attack on several occasions later in the game. Unfortunately the Hills were unable to keep the ball in attack when it counted.

Steve Northrop, Russell Fry and Ryan Agnew also added some skill and toughness to the contest, and linked up well through the half back and middle of the ground. Ryan was playing only his second match for the Redbacks, and will be looking to build on an encouraging start to the season.

Dylan Collins provided a good focal point in attack, taking a few pack marks for a return of three goals. First gamer Justin Poyser was also impressive and picked up a lot of possessions playing the true centre position on the ground.

Daniel Belcher didn’t kick any goals in round 3, although he did kick one the week earlier against Diamond Creek. Parkinson, D. Strickland, B. Strongman, J. Lyngcoln, J. Whitcher

It’s not every day that the Panton Hill Football Club has the opportunity to play a match on ANZAC Day, however with the important date falling on a Saturday this year, the Club found itself in a unique situation with the Spud Cannan Trophy also up for grabs. The two teams lined up facing the crowd on Saturday, and together observed a minute’s silence and the spine-tingling sounds of The Last Post. It was certainly a moment that all players will remember being involved in, and the effect was there for all to see.

The Hills jumped out of the blocks, with four goals in an adrenaline-filled opening term, to take a slight lead into quarter time. Diamond Creek counter-punched in the second term to regain the lead, and the match remained a tight physical tussle to three-quarter time.

It was clear that something had to give, and unfortunately for the Redbacks, the final stanza saw the demoted Division 1 team flex their muscle, kicking eight goals to two as the home side ran out of legs after fighting hard for the first three quarters.

At the very least Coach Garry Ramsay can seek some comfort in the fact that his side stuck with the more-fancied Diamond Creek team for three quarters, however the final term fade-out will raise questions of commitment and fitness.

It was encouraging to see the recently returned Shane Sykes turn on a best afield performance for the home side, as he displayed good leadership and determination around the ground while Robbie Parkinson also had a good game that he will savour after a 2008 campaign riddled with injury.

Danny Strickland also gave the Coaching staff reason to smile, with a good overall performance that proved commitment to his new team mates, whilst Captain Ben Strongman, Nuts and Whitcher were typically solid and rounded out the best players on the day.

Saturday’s result has seen the Redbacks slip to 12th on the league ladder, and they will need to regroup quickly in order to turn things around in round three, with a home game against a strong Parkside outfit.

RESERVES

Panton Hill: 5.5-35
Diamond Creek: 15.14-104

Goal Kickers: D. Belcher, J. Ballock, K. Gilmore, S. Northrop, J. Gilliland

Best Players: C. Sansom, T. Coleman, C. Cummings, P. Strongman, R. Heywood, J. Gilliland

The Panton Hill reserves side was less than convincing in an overall flat performance against the Diamond Creek side, who maintained a comfortable lead all game. The Redbacks failed to fire early, not registering a score until the second term, and by that stage the scrip appeared written for an uninspiring ANZAC Day experience.

Chris Sansom was again solid in the ruck, shouldering much of the responsibility for the match and never stopped attacking the ball. Trent Coleman was similarly committed to the contest, and ran hard all day, eating up a lot of possessions on the wing, while Christian Cummings had his work cut out in defence and battled hard.

Paul Strongman displayed leadership around the contests, and new comers Richard Heywood and James Gilliland also impressed the coaching staff on a day where there were no real stand-out performances.

The two’s will look forward to the upcoming match against Parkside, with memories of last year’s narrow loss at home, where many players stood up and made a name for themselves late in the 2008 season. Be at the ground by noon on Saturday to cheer our boys on, as they seek their first win of 2009.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

2009 ROUND 1 - SOUTH MORANG RETAIN GORGE TROPHY

SENIORS

South Morang 20.15-135
Panton Hill 16.13-109

Goal Kickers: P. Whitcher, N. Smith, G. Mc Auliffe

After months of preseason preparation, a plethora of arrivals, and a few departures, the Panton Hill train was finally ready to roll on a shiny new set of tracks. This was to be the start of a new beginning, and an opportunity to see where the Redbacks of 2009 are really at.

This was the strongest team that Hill has fielded in some time, and the players were confident that they could push anyone in the league.

Of course, when so many changes occur to a footy side, it is going to take some time for the players to adjust, and whilst that factor wasn’t glaringly obvious to all supporters, it probably played a part in a few passages of play. The result was a promising, yet disappointing first round loss to a slightly more polished opponent.

Senior Coach Garry Ramsay, while preferring to win will take some positives from the sometimes fiery match, which will be seen as a minimum benchmark for upcoming matches.

It was promising to see that club leaders Will Box and Ben Strongman have not lost any form over the summer months, both men claiming a great deal of contested positions following the ball around the ground. Similarly, “Pistol” Pete Davey and Justin Whitcher were very damaging in front of goal.

First year player Nathan Smith was also very encouraging, and should only improve with more match time in a new team, whilst “Stringer” McAuliffe was typically solid in defence. The players will be itching to put the first win on the board against Diamond Creek on Saturday.

RESERVES

South Morang: 11.14-80
Panton Hill: 9.7-61

Goal Kickers: J. Ballock 5, D. Collins 2, B. Brown, A. Anderson
Best Players: J. Ballock, C Sansom, A. Boyle, B. Brown, D. Collins, L. Walsh

Much like the senior side, the reserves side was very strong on paper when compared to recent seasons. Many regular 2008 senior players found themselves in unfamiliar territory playing in the two’s, and would have seen the situation as an opportunity to prove themselves and push for senior selection.

Regular senior players John “JB” Ballock and Ben Brown responded in style, both men dominating the forward line, and JB particularly impressive with 5 goals. Dylan Collins was also impressing around goal, kicking 2 himself.

In stark contrast, it was a first gamer Chris “German” Sansom in the ruck who performed beyond all expectations and found a lot of the ball, and ran all day. Andy Boyle and Lucas Walsh also performed well, and will be looking forward on building to positive starts to their respective seasons.

The actual match itself seemed to set the tone for the senior team, as the reserves also fell just short of a win, although the match will be seen as a final opportunity to dust of the cobwebs and move forward for the remainder of the season.

COMING UP

Round 2 presents as being very significant for the Panton Hill Football Club, as the Redbacks not only have the privilege of playing on ANZAC Day, the match will also be played for the “Spud” Cannan Trophy. Don’t miss round two at home against Diamond Creek.

This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 18 - Heidelberg West fall short after giving it all

SENIORS

Heidelberg West threw everything at Panton Hill in the final round of the season in an effort to get a win on the board. Things went their way in the first quarter with nine scoring shots to one. ALthough the Hills worked their way in to the game thanks to the efforts of a striong of second level players, West still held the lead at half time. However, once Panton Hill got on top the Hawks spirit was broken and the final quarter was a blowout. Daniel Pratt was exceptional in the ruck and around the ground to finish what has been his best ever season at the Hills.

Meanwhile, the resrves were given a football lesson by a more experienced Heidelberg West side to end a disappointing season. Coach Jon Manzoney is determined to improve things next season and has asked all players to get behind the side and prepare themselves properly in pre-season.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 17 - Parkside wrestle away a win

SENIORS

The depth of the seniors was tested once again with further injuries and small spearhead Justin Whitcher away for the weekend. But with a well thought out game plan things worked beautifully for the Redbacks in the first half as the home side went in against Parkside at half time with a seven goal lead. An extended half time break allowed for the annual CFA cup between St Andrews and Panton Hill Primary Schools which provided an opportunity for the senior sides to recuperate. However, the lack of fitness in the Panton Hill side showed up once again as Parkside went about pegging back the lead goal by goal and eventually ran over the top of the Hills in the final quarter. A disappointing result in such a promising performance especially after the efforts of Will Box and Ben Strongman who deserved a better outcome.

RESERVES

A very even first quarter in a slow moving game as neither side could find the goals, but as things opened up in the second quarter it was Parkside that looked the goods and piled on five goals to one up to half time. But the fighting spirit of the Redback Reserves showed through and the Hills brought themselves right back into the game in the third quarter. In the end Parkside held out but the effort of the Redbacks was pleasing. The Mernda ground was in perfect condition for a fast flowing first quarter and although the Hills scored three goals The Demons scored eight straight from some decisive centre clearances. The next two quarters were a lot closer as the Panton Hill side put themselves back in the game. The last was a blowout although the positives were two goals to Ricky Woods and one to Justin Whitcher to cap off another good game to the small forward.

RESERVES

Only one on the bench makes it tough but great to see some old faces helping out the magoos. Boyle

Although coming off a loss (to the top side), third placed Macleod have been beating most sides easily and this was always going to be a tough one for the Redbacks. As usual Rambo had the side fired up with the ‘nothing to lose, everything to prove’ attitude but disappointingly the afternoon didn’t pan out the way we had hoped.

Unfortunately the Hillers never really threatened on the scoreboard as Macleod had more of ball for most of the afternoon. At times it was a spiteful encounter with a few dust-ups and even a verbal encounter between opposing supporters at the final change. All in all Macleod were too good and ran out very comfortable victors.

Shock horror, Strongy didn’t get B.O.G. this week – those honours went to Huffy – he only managed to kick two goals and get second best on (really poor performance Ben). After missing most of the season through injury, Nuts slotted through a major for the Hills’ and was again quite impressive. And Witcher chimed in with his stock standard five goals!

THIRD QUARTER BLITZ TOPPLES TWOS

Panton Hill: 6.9-45
Macleod: 16.12-108

Goal Kickers: M. Paterson 3, M. Lawn, J. Anderson, D. Brown
Best Players: M. Paterson, A. Flanagan, M. Lawn, D. Walton, L. Walsh, D. Brown

Last week’s season-changing performance against Watsonia had the Redbacks reserves players buzzing with a new-found sense of belief that they could be competitive with anyone. We were back at home for the first time in a few weeks, and it was a barmy July afternoon. Conditions were perfect for football, however this week we had a depleted bench, so an enduring four-quarter effort would be required from each player.

The first half was relatively even as the Hills reduced an early Kangaroos lead, courtesy of some crafty forward work from Kiwi (#1). However, just before half time the Redbacks were hit with a double-punch. Strongy had been politely asked to leave the arena and not return for a couple of weeks after a goal-square encounter with his opponent, whilst Simon Shell was cut down by the Redback injury curse, suffering a painful knee injury in the centre of the ground. Shelly had been dominating in the ruck contests until this stage.

Given that only 17 players remained in the black and red Jono stripped out of his jacket and jeans and pulled on the boots to give the team a fighting chance. At the long break he told the players that it was time to dig deep for each other, and we must be switched on at the start of the second half. Unfortunately this did not happen, and the third quarter saw the Macleod side run rampant and drill goals from all over the place, relatively unpressured.

It was effectively game over by the final term, however a spirited quarter from the Hills saw them keep the opposition goal-less for the quarter, and score a few in the process. Clearly a four-quarter effort could have won the game, however the overall signs from the game confirmed that the team’s improvement a week earlier was no fluke.

Kiwi (#1) kicked three goals and had plenty of the ball through the middle of the ground, dishing out plenty of trademark runs and “don’t argues,” in a dominant performance. Flange continued his good form in the centre of the ground, taking many solid marks and pushing the team forward, with great support from Lawny, and Kiwi (#2) who won a lot of the contested ball.

Walshy was typically reliable down back, and took some great marks on the last line and also provided run out of defence. At the other end of the ground it was the Dave “Bobby” Brown show, in the last quarter in particular, as Browny pranced around like a gazelle, creating several forward opportunities and scoring a goal himself to the delight of the Panton Hill crowd. Browny will be performing at Mernda this coming Saturday at 11:55am as the side plays its last away game for the year. Get up there and support the resurgent reserves side.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 14: Disappointing afternoon for the Redbacks

Watsonia: 22.16-148
Panton Hill: 7.5-47

Goal Kickers: M. Walker

With Watsonia on a run of losses leading into this match, and the Redbacks focus on intensity during the week on the training track, there was plenty of optimism that we could reverse the result from the corresponding match earlier in the season.

The match started very well for Panton Hill and by the first break we had a couple of majors on the board and had managed to keep the Saints goalless. Watsonia well and truly reversed the trend in the second quarter and kicked eight goals to one to take a solid lead in at half time. From these two contrasting quarters it was obvious that the side with (you guessed it) more intensity, would swing the game in their favour.

Unfortunately it was the Saint that managed to gain the ascendancy after the main break. Their four goals versus our two in the third term wasn’t too bad by the Hillers but saw the deficit blow out to over seven goals at the final change. The forth quarter was very disappointing; Watsonia opened the flood gates and slotted through 10 majors to extend the final winning margin to just over the tonne.

Surprise, surprise, BOG: B. Strongman. Whitesnake did a marathon of hard running and was very impressive in the first half whilst Adam Anderson (up from the reserves) worked very hard and managed to slot through a major for his efforts. Stevie Northrop had no hesitation throwing his weight around and took some telling marks in defence and likewise Snappy was very solid down back.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY FROM THE MAGOOS?

Watsonia: 9.14-68
Panton Hill: 3.11-29

Goal Kickers: J. Anderson 2, B. Trim
Best Players: D. Collins, C. Tanti, D. Walton, J. Cunningham, T. Coleman, A. Flanagan

‘Soft’? Panton Hill players are not soft. After a particularly disappointing trip over the gorge a week prior, the Redbacks were fired up early to redeem themselves against Watsonia on a freakin’ cold Saturday afternoon at the old Grimshaw Street ground.

The Hillers had all of the play in a physical, sometimes fiery encounter, but some wayward scoring attempts kept the Saints just ahead for most of the match. Jimmy Anderson kept the Hills in it and slotted a couple of pearlers with his shiny white boots, and Watsonia lead by just two goals at three-quarter time.

The final quarter was looking like a corker, but things got tougher for the Hills when the icy cold breeze turned into a low-grade hurricane to the Saints’ advantage. Unfortunately the Redbacks players appeared to switch off after a quick start from the Watsonia camp. The Saints created an overlap which worked very well, allowing their onballers to push forward with ease, and bury the Hills.

Regardless of the result, Jono was content with the effort his players put into the match, and acknowledged that the team had taken another step in the right direction.

Big man Dylan had a great day out, and was in many contests, dominating both overhead and on the ground, due to his physical pressure that he created to the advantage of himself and his team mates. Earlier in the game it was ‘Tanti-time,’ which is a period of play where Chris Tanti bursts out of his skin in a totally dominant fashion with superhuman affect. As a result Chris had a bit of confidence which he used well for the remainder of the game, creating havoc for the opposition.

Kiwi (#2) has been improving significantly in previous weeks, and Saturday was his best game yet. The ex-rugby union player was everywhere, and used his pace and skill very well to propel the Redbacks forward throughout the day. Another new player who recently crossed from union is Jamie Cunningham, who, in his third match, appeared very comfortable in laying bone crunching tackles and winning the hard ball.

Trenta and Flange were also very reliable through the middle of the ground, and maintained some ball-winning ability and order to the side, which is still young and widely inexperienced.

There’s no turning back from here. The Reserves side has raised the bar for itself and will be looking to create havoc in the next couple of weeks against teams that may still be aiming for finals. It’s a home game on the 19th, against Macleod, followed by an already booked out trivia night at the Panton Hill Hotel. So be there from 11:55am on Saturday, and get vocal for our boys.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 13: Battle of the gorge

South Morang: 15.18-108
Panton Hill: 7.7-49

Goal Kickers: J. Constantine

It was an all too familiar situation for the Redback reserves side on the weekend gone. Whilst most players battled hard, they were outclassed by a fit and skilful Lions outfit. The players put in a four-quarter effort, however Jono (Coach) was not convinced that the side had taken a step forward from the previous game, although he admitted that the match was not a step backwards either.

Walshy had the toughest task of all, given the job of shutting down South Morang’s big full-forward, who was significantly stronger and heavier than the young Redback. Walshy performed well, considering the circumstances, and was clearly the best player for the Hills, continually denying his opponent the easy chest mark.

Strongy and Adam Anderson were also busy throughout the game, following the ball for most of the day, and adding a lot of pressure to the contests, whilst Belcher did the same playing a few different roles. Belch shut down a couple of big ball winners, and also managed to kick a running goal himself.

It was great to have Kiwi (#1) back in the side, as he got plenty of the loose ball, and also laid some bone crunching tackles on the wing. Conno popped up in the second half, as he followed his opponent up to the opposite wing, and ran circles around a few Lions after having a quiet first half.

Round 14 presents as a better opportunity for the Hills to really take the next step on the large Watsonia ground, so get down there to support our boys.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 12: Hillers home in thriller

Panton Hill: 15.11-101
Reservoir: 15.10-100

Goal Kickers: J. Mc Auliffe

After a much improved week on the training track the first quarter started well. The hillers had a majority of the play but took their time to make it show on the score board. The backline were very solid and allowed the home side to take a three goal advantage into the first break.

The second quarter saw Reservoir get right back into the game as they kicked the first four goals unanswered. But the Hillers steadied and were able to spot up targets in attack and answered back to lead by a goal at half time.

The third stanza was fairly level pegging but the hills, kicking to the scoring end, managed to extend the lead back out to the three goal buffer at the final change.

Reservoir again kicked the first four goals of the term to snatch a narrow lead and the crowd had their heads in their hands. The quarter agonisingly dragged on with Ressa maintaining a slender lead until Justin Witcher, deep in the forward pocket, miraculously saw some daylight between the big sticks and bobbed up for his seventh goal of the afternoon. This sent the local crowd into raptures but there was another excruciating minute to come. A couple of ball ups and boundary throw-ins in the defensive fifty would have done nothing for those with a heart condition, but the Redbacks dug deep and managed to hold strong for a thrilling one point victory!

You can’t go past Witcher, the seven goal hero, but once again ‘Max’ Power was at his evasive best and was a very close second in the BOG honours. Stringa McAuliffe had the fist primed was superb in defence – he will be looking for a call up to the AFL this week after leaving Robert Powell thinking his 66 league games (for Richmond and St. Kilda) were a walk in the park in comparison to being stitched up by the ‘super-fist’! Strongy just continues to firm as favourite for the B&F as the weeks pass by and Boxy ignored the fact he had a bruise the size of a large continent on the back of his leg to post a very solid performance.

In a game that ebbed and flowed, and well and truly looked like it could have slipped away showed real character and commitment from the boys to get over the line. The relief as the final siren blared was evident. Rambo the nervous wrecked ran out and embraced the players as the celebrated on the ground and then jubilant home crowd piled into the rooms and helped them belt out the song.

RESERVES TAKE ANOTHER SMALL STEP FORWARD

Panton Hill: 4.2-26
Reservoir: 23.21-159

Goal Kickers: G. Wise 2, A. Anderson 2
Best Players: M. Constantine, A. Anderson, D. Collins, T. Dummett, A. Flanagan, W. Binnion

Saturday’s match at home was always going to be tough with a forever-mounting injury list that doesn’t seem to be slowing down. This meant that the Reserves lost some more experienced players to the senior side, making the task all the more difficult. However, Redbacks never say die, and the team was switched on from the outset.

The result was a very even match for three and a half quarters, however the Hills boys just couldn’t make an impact on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the tired legs appeared to get the better of the players in the last ten minutes of the match, as the side effectively “rolled over,” and opened the flood-gates for the Reservoir team to tear the game apart all too easily.

Jono (Coach) was mostly pleased with the efforts of his team, and believes that the side took another step forward, although made it clear that the lacklustre efforts of the dying stages of the game will not be tolerated in the future. The message being that there is still a long road ahead to achieve the team goals, but the right signs are there.

The Redbacks were led by a solid four-quarter effort from Conno, who provided some much-needed run out of the backline, and linked up well with the midfield in what was possibly his best match for the club to date. Adam Anderson was equally effective, and more damaging on the scoreboard, providing plenty of clearances around the centre and chipping in with two goals, including a team-lifting 40 metre running goal across his body.

Dylan and Ty were also busy all day, adding some muscle to the contest and getting plenty of the ball themselves, while Flange used his experience to his advantage and set up play across the half forward line. Wazza continued to build on his improved recent form, getting plenty of the pill playing at half forward, and continually beating his opponent. First-gamer Jamie Cunningham also showed some promise for the Hills which will give him some confidence for the remainder of the season.

Next week is another mouth-watering contest over at the new South Morang ground, which is in the Mill Park Lakes estate. The slightly larger, well kept ground should give the Hills players an ideal platform to take the next step, hopefully in front of a strong Panton Hill contingent.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 11

Thomastown: 30.27-207
Panton Hill: 5.9-39

Goal Kickers: S. Binnion
Best Players: (information not available)

At noon on Saturday the Redback players went into an unlikely match with several men down, so many that there was, in fact, no bench available. This made playing against a superior opponent all the more difficult. And when Willow came off the ground early with a shoulder injury, Coach Jono Manzoney showed his true colours and pulled on the guernsey for his side, helping out however he could.

Unfortunately for Jono’s team, the intent of the Thomastown side was obvious from the outset, playing direct to a couple of solid forward targets was the aim of their game. To their credit, they executed the game plan well, often hitting forward targets on the chest, lace out.

The Redback players stuck to the task all day, and when Wazza slotted an easy goal in the third quarter there were cheers all round. However, this would be the only major of the day and it was apparent that our boys were boxing out of their division. The fitter, more skilful Thomastown side did not let up, although it was a great effort from the Hills backline to restrict the opposition to only four goals in the final quarter.

No ‘best player’ details have been provided this week, however the humble opinion of this writer suggests there were some noteworthy contributions throughout the day by Parrot, Morsey, Rich, Blair and the Anderson boys. First-gamer Andy Boyle also showed that he has potential, and Simon Shell battled hard all day in the ruck, even after a heavy knock to the head which saw the lights go out for a few seconds during the third quarter.

Round 12’s match against Reservoir at home looks to be a mouth-watering contest and the reserves side will be out to win their second game of the season, so get to the Hill this weekend for what should be a rip-snorter.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 10: Hills triumph in local derby

Panton Hill: 13.7-85
Hurstbridge: 10.14-74

Goal Kickers: J. With a growing list of injuries, the Hill’s fielded somewhat of a new look side, with seven changes and four of them new players.

In a season that has all but slipped away, on Thursday night Coach Ramsay pleaded with us to make something of the second half; and when the game got underway it looked like message had sunk in. Within a matter of minutes, Whitesnake (returning from eight weeks on the sidelines with a broken finger) had the first goal on the board and Witcher the second for the Hills.

At quarter time the Hills had a four goal break due to some impressive work in the centre by the Redbacks and some undisciplined acts by Hurstbridge. The tempo lifted in the second term and the Bridges were able to peg back a few at the scoring end and had narrowed the margin by the main break. Having been in similar positions in previous games and letting them slip, Gary warned against any complacency in the second half.

The second half ebbed and flowed and at times it seemed that the Bridges could possibly take control against the relatively inexperience Redbacks. To our credit the boys held strong in defence and were always able to find the answers when the Bridges threatened.

Tim ‘Max’ Power played the game of his life providing run and spark right across the ground, easily best a field and two goals to ‘boot’. Will Box was taking trade‘marks’ across half back in the final term and cut off several attacks by the Bridges. After a week in the reserves, Chris Cahir was great up and down the wing and JB was well and truly back in form. Until half time Gunny was supberb with his run out of the back line, but devastatingly rolled an ankle and was rushed off to the sperm bank….. I mean hospital, which turned out to be a broken foot.

The end result was a narrow 11 point victory to Panton Hill and as the song was blasted over the PA the crowd sung with gusto.

SCOREBOARD FLATTERS HURSTY RESERVES

Panton HilL: 1.4-10
Hurstbridge: 19.17-131

Goal Kickers: T. Dummett
Best Players: B. Hathaway, G. Wise, B. Wilson, L. Walsh, M. Constantine, T. Dummett

As with all games against Hurstbridge, there was a big build up this match, on a day where cross-town rivalry was alive and well at the Hill. The match was hard fought from the start, as the Hills made the effort to ensure a contest, all to aware of the dangers of not being switched on early. The majority of the game was played between the two attacking zones as both teams’ defence stood up well against continual assaults from the opposition. The result was a relatively even first half, with the Redbacks being within reach at the half time break, although Henry’s team had been able to find targets in the forward line more often than the Hills.

To Panton Hill’s credit, the effort continued into the second half, although the effects of inferior match fitness and skill soon started to show, as the Hurstbridge side began to win the hard ball and were able to hit their full forward on the chest more often than not. The Redbacks struggled to get the ball into their attacking zone, and as a result the second half became a one sided affair on the scoreboard, and the Hills were slowly outclassed.

It was noted by Jono that the boys had given all they had, and could not fault his team’s performance, conceding that the Hurstbridge team were fitter and more skilful on the day, which is a good summation of the performance.

Blair Hathaway had a good day out for the Hills, and was named best on for his efforts through the middle of the ground. Blair has been improving each week since his first game earlier in the season, which is the result of hard work on the training track and plenty of commitment to the contest on game day. Well done Blair.

Ben ‘Willow’ Wilson came into the side this week after being relieved of senior duties, and did not disappoint. Willow brought plenty of hardness to the contests around the ground and was instrumental in winning the hard ball gets through the middle, along with the usual suspects in Parrot, Ty and Trenta.

Walshy had a tough task at full back as his opponent had the luxury of many lace-out deliveries in front of goal, and Walshy performed well under this pressure, and was well assisted for the duration of the match by Conno, who returned this week from injury. Much to the delight of the fans ‘Duffy’ pulled on the boots this week after a couple of years, and was of good assistance to the back line for most of the game. Hopefully he enjoyed himself and will continue on for the black and red.

Next week the boys will be tackling a tough competitor across town when they visit the mud patch at Thomastown. The Redbacks will need the support of the fans, so make the drive over Plenty Road on Saturday if you can.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 9: Hard working Hills outplayed by Epping

Epping: 21.15-141
Panton Hill: 8.7-55

Goal Kickers: J. Ballock

Although the score line is not flattering, Epping certainly didn’t have things all their own way. It was a hard fought first term with the back line standing up well and the Hillers were only down by a few goals at the first break. The former divi 1 side were unfortuantely outplaying Panton Hill and extended their lead to eight goals by the main break.

There were promosing signs at the start of the second half with a couple of goals to Panton Hill, but Epping had all the answers. The third quarter went along the same lines – the Redbacks not doing much wrong, but just being outplayed by a more skilful side. The eleven goal deficit at the final change didn’t really seem representative of the state of the game. Panton Hill kept their heads, finished strong and were quite impressive in the last term. Given Epping were in division 1 side last year and have just hit form (beating two of the top sides in the past fortnight), restricting them to just three goals (to our one) in a game where the result was already beyond doubt, was a really great effort.

As is becoming very much a weekly occurrence, Strongy accumulated possessions at will and would be an almost unbackable favourite for the best-and-fairest with yet another BOG performance. Will Box was outstanding in the first half and absolutely dominated one of Eppings better players. He kicked two goals to boot which is not a regular feature of his game, so I am sure he’ll be happy to run you through them if you’re interested! Witcher kicked three and was a solid contributor, as was Oaksey against his old side.

Some positive signs to come from this game as we head into the mid-season break. Rambo challenged the players to stick tight and train with real purpose as we prepare for the local derby against Hurstbridge in two weeks.

REDBACK RESERVES ANNIHILATED

Epping: 41.15-261
Panton Hill: 1.3-9

Goal Kickers: J. Anderson
Best Players: D. Belcher, T. Coleman, C. Cahir, B. Hathaway, G. Wise, S. Northrop

It was always going to be tough for the Hills. Injuries aplenty plus several players promoted to the senior squad meant that the player stocks were limited. Furthermore, the 6-man bench had somehow reduced to one player prior to the game. Several players were also carrying injury niggles, but that’s no excuse is it? Regardless, it was hardly the ideal way to man up against one of the best sides in the competition.

The Panton Hill players have been in the situation before, and miracles were never expected of the group. It is the passion and the hard work and commitment that people want to see. Unfortunately there were very few players who put in a four quarter effort, with the notable exceptions of Belcher and Trenta, who received little support for their efforts.

Anyone watching the performance from the sidelines would no doubt have been disappointed by the manner in which the team appeared to roll over for Epping. Some may even have questioned the desire of the players. The result was far from acceptable, and Coach Jono Manzoney made that clear, putting the heat on the players to take some pride in their own performances and work for each other.

The long weekend has come at a good time, with an opportunity for players to rest, and reflect on the first half of the season before taking it to the cross town rivals, Hurstbridge, on 14 June. This will be a big home game and the players will be eager to right the wrongs of the first half of the season.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 8: Panton Hill fade out in final term

Panton Hill: 10.10-70
Fitzroy Stars: 21.17-143

Goal Kickers: J. Pratt

The most disappointing this about this result is that the Hillers were within a goal at three quarter time.

Coming off a couple of losses to genuine finals’ contenders, the Redbacks were very keen to get back on the winners list. Despite some of the Fitzroy Stars having played in the dreamtime exhibition match at the MCG the night before, it was a tight game from the word go and they were serving it right up to Panton Hill. The boys were quite competitive throughout the first three quarters and the narrow margin at the final break seemed to indicate that the big Sunday crowd were in for a close finish.

Disappointingly this was not the case. The Redbacks dropped right away and allowed the stars to slam on eleven goals in the last quarter to run out comfortable winners.

It may feel like a case of de ja vu, but Benny Strongman was once again very impressive and easily best a field for Panton Hill.

RESERVES CHANCE GOES BEGGING

Panton Hill: 4.12-36
Fitzroy Stars: 9.16-70

Goal Kickers: T. Dummett 3, M. Peck
Best Players: A. Solum, T. Coleman, S. Northrop, S. Jones, D. Belcher, A. Anderson

The stage was set on Sunday for a good showcase game. The crowd was in early to watch the juniors, and many decided to hang around to watch the reserves straight after. There was a good feeling of confidence amongst the players, and the Hills were hungry for a win.

The match started well enough, with plenty of attacking as the Hills kicked to the scoreboard end, with the crowd on their side. However, missed opportunities in front of goal from several players cost the Redbacks in the first half, and the Stars were able to convert more often on the counter-attack. In the end the score line flattered Fitzroy’s performance, as the Hills were competitive all game, and only faded towards the end of the match due to a mounting injury toll.

Solly was a standout in the backline, giving vital support to Walshy, who took another step on the back of last weeks best-on performance, however mysteriously does not appear in the best six this week. It could be argued that this is due to a relatively even and consistent performance among the playing group. Trenta played his best game in a long time, carving up the wings of the ground and was well assisted by the likes of Steve, Belch and Adam Anderson. It was good to see a familiar face in Simon Jones back in the team, and he provided great support through the middle of the ground. Welcome back Jonesy.
Next week the Hills face possibly their biggest challenge yet, taking on former division 1 side Epping, at their home ground. The Redbacks will take a lot of positives out of Sunday’s match and will be keen to build on those on Saturday.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 7: Miserable day for the Hills

Panton Hill: 3.5-23
Whittlesea: 23.25-163

Goal Kickers: C. Box

The only thing worse than the wet, seven degree weather was the miserable performance by the PH boys. Pre-game we thought the conditions would level out the playing field and saw it as a great opportunity to take it up to the competition leaders. Unfortunately, the wet only served to emphasise the gap between the sides and the final result was nothing short of embarrassing.

To Whittlesea’s credit, they were stronger at the ball, handled the conditions well, worked hard for each other and regularly found avenues to goal. They had winners right across the ground and probably the only player for the Redback’s who held their own was best-on-ground Scott ‘Snappy’ Walker. Other players worth a mention (insert auto-text here) were Strongy, Huffy, Witcher and Boxy.

On a very forgettable afternoon, injuries also took their toll with Parko, Butts and Ricky Woods unable to finish the game. With so few positives to draw out of the game (other than finally giving away no 25 meter penalties) all we can do is turn our focus to next week and try to make amends against the Fitzroy Stars.

HARD FIGHTING RESERVES UNDERMANNED AND OUTCLASSED

Panton Hill: 2.2-14
Whittlesea: 23.23-161

Goal Kickers: M. Constantine

Finally, a return to our home ground at the Hill for a tough assignment against a team touted as being the one of the best going around. The Football Gods had the ground in perfect condition for a scrappy affair, a result of 36 hours of steady rain, which was a novelty for both sides.

After last weeks embarrassment at the hands of Lower Plenty, Senior Coach Gary Ramsay gave the troops a rev up, prior to Jono Manzoney’s pre-game address, and it may have hit home for many of the reserves players. The first half of the match was an arm-wrestle, with Whittlesea able to break the lines on a few more occasions than the Redbacks, and going into the half time break with a seven goal lead, however this was a much better effort than the previous week (20 goals down @ half time). Unfortunately for the Hills, the efforts of the first half had left the team with several injuries, and no bench.

The second half proved to be a bit of a blow-out, and further injuries to the Hills meant that Jono pulled on the guernsey for the first time in a long time, showing his dedication to the side. The Redbacks players stuck to the task, however a fitter Eagles side were eventually able to run out easy winners in the wet.

Jono was pleased with his team’s efforts, regardless of the score, on a day where everyone’s character was tested and no-one backed down from the challenge. In particular, Lucas Walsh was an absolute revelation at full back, continually breaking the lines with plenty of dash, and marking the wet ball over the top of packs.

Of course, the entire backline was under a lot of pressure all game, and Walshy received great support from ‘Parrot’ (Grenville Wise) and Mick Constantine, whilst Trav ‘Kirky’ Beattie played one of his best games for the Club, applying fantastic physical pressure on his opponents. Steve Northrop and Dylan Robilliard also worked tirelessly around the stoppages to lock the ball in and create a contest at every opportunity, while Dylan also had the extra task of filling in the ruck duties for much of the game.

Next week is a little unusual, as the round 8 clash with the Fitzroy Stars has been moved to Sunday the 25th, due to the Stars having other commitments on the Saturday. This is a real chance for another win, and is another home game for the Hills, following the juniors, so get there nice and early for the curtain raisers to support the future stars of Panton Hill!
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 6: Lower Plenty too good in the second half

Lower Plenty: 18.19-127
Panton Hill: 11.13-79

Goal Kickers: P. Pratt

Against a side we’ve never beaten, this game was built up as an important one in the context of the season, not only to improve the win-loss ratio, but coming off a solid win last week the boys wanted to benchmark themselves against one of the stronger team in the competition. And the early signs were good! It was a solid first quarter by the Redbacks, but with plenty of room for improvement and only a one point deficit, Coach Ramsay was optimistic. Three goals to two in the second term saw the Hills snatch the lead by half-time and during the break you could feel the desire and enthusiasm to create some history.

Unfortunately the second half didn’t go to the script. The Bears managed to get on a roll and the Hillers were unable to reverse the trend. Lower kicked six and seven goals respectively in third and forth (to our three and two) and ended up running away with the victory 127 – 79.

Once again our captain, Strongman, saw plenty of the footy and picked up best on ground honours. Huffy kept going about his business as he does week in, week out, as did vice-captain Will Box. ‘Super-fist’ (Stringa) was up to his usual standard and Chris Seaman was very impressive across the half-back line. Pratty had another good week in the ruck, particularly in the first half as we matched it with the Bears.

The end result was bitterly disappointing and unfortunately (as this is our only match against them in 2008) Lower retain the bragging rights for another year.

BEARS THUMP HAPLESS REDBACK RESERVES

Lower Plenty: 45.19-289
Panton Hill: 2.1-13

Goal Kickers: C. After last weeks fantastic team effort the Redbacks were this week stunned by the fast and direct Lower Plenty team. A bitterly disappointing and one-sided affair, this match was anything but, and illustrates the rift between the stronger and weaker sides in the competition. Nonetheless, the result should not have been so extreme.

On a day where individual performances were few and far between Ty Dummett, team Captain, was an absolute standout on the field. Coach John Manzoney declared on Saturday that Ty’s work rate and leadership in what he does and says on the field is unmatched and he should be seen as a role model for the playing group.

For the remainder of the side, Saturday’s effort would not be a memorable one from either a team or individual perspective.

After three weeks away, the Hills will finally return home this coming weekend, where they will be after plenty of local support to help them take on the power of the Whittlesea side.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 5: Everything finally clicks for the Hills!

Panton Hill: 19.12-126
Heidelberg West: 6.8-44

Goal Kickers: D. Butler 6, P. Davey 2, J. Whitcher 2, D. Pratt 2, B. Strongman 2, S. Gunn 2, J. Ballock, C. Seaman, T. Power
Best Players: W. Box, D. Pratt, B. Strongman, J. Whitcher, R. Woods, D. Butler

After another great week on the training track, and the disappointment of the previous match, everything finally clicked for the Hills. The boys started off well and really dominated the first quarter – but a wasteful 3.6 in front of goal meant the lead at the break was only 16 points. The Redbacks’ intensity dropped off a bit in the second term, but to their credit were still able to outscore West Heidelberg by a goal.

At half-time the players were served with a reminder of the focus for 2008: discipline, sticking to the game plan, playing for your mates and enthusiasm. And perhaps the message finally sunk in. The second half of the game was easily our best footy for the year, played with plenty of passion and emotion and some fiery encounters ensued. The Hillers piled on 13 goals to three to run out winners by 82 points.

Although there were impressive performances right across the ground, of particular note were captain and vice-captain Ben Strongman and Will Box. Also in the best three was newly appointed deputy-vice, Pratty, who dominated the ruck contest all afternoon. Returning from a hamstring injury, assistant coach Witcher was superb throughout the first half, Ricky Woods racked up plenty off possessions and contested marks across the half forward line and Butler Snr. kicked six. There are several other players who deserve a mention, but it was ‘Max’ Power’s inspirational passage of play to set up a goal early in the second half which really provided the much needed spark and enthusiasm which lifted the whole team.

Individual performances aside, what mattered most to players and supporters alike, was to finally sing that song (twice) at the end of the match. It was the corresponding match last year that caused Browny to give footy away after he had his skulled cracked open. Hope you enjoyed the win Browny!!

TWO'S BREAK THE DROUGHT IN STYLE

Heidelberg West: 4.7-31
Panton Hill: 15.9-99

Goal Kickers: G. Francis 3, B. Hathaway 2, D. Belcher 2, J. Anderson 2, M. Paterson, L. Walsh, G. Wise, B. Trim, P. Strongman, T. Dummett
Best Players: G. Carr, T. Coleman, G. Francis, M. Lawn, M. Constantine, J. Anderson

The last time that the Redbacks reserves team experienced victory was against Heidelberg West at their home ground, a ground much larger than our own, and one which may possibly double as a backup landing strip for small aircraft. The team from Panton Hill attacked hard from the start and soon made the foreign ground their own, linking up well out of defence and full of hard running.

The story of the day was the positive teamwork and confidence in each other to get the job done across the board, as the reserves team were never headed and appeared to have all the answers to any of the Hawks counter attacks. All players lifted and contributed to the Redbacks cause, which was extremely pleasing for Coach John Manzoney who praised the significant step that the Hills had taken in one week of football.

Grant Carr was unstoppable all match in the ruck in a best on ground performance on a day where picking best players was something of a raffle, such was the evenness of the team’s work ethic and execution. ‘Trenta’ Coleman was also back near his best form whilst Greggy Francis and goal sneak Jimmy Anderson were fantastic in attack. Mark Lawn and Mick Constantine also had good days out, contributing with solid rebound footy out of defence and some quick ball movement through the middle of the ground.

The weekend’s win has given the Redback side some much-needed confidence in their own ability to be competitive and work together, which will put them in good stead to face the strength of Lower Plenty on the coming Saturday, which has been billed by the AFL as ‘Community Football Weekend.’
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 4: Hills still can't break duck

Panton Hill: 7.10-52
Parkside: 14.7-91

Goal Kickers: D. Box

After a superb week on the training track the boys had really set themselves for their first win of season 2008. Parkside won the toss and elected to kick with the five goal wind, so the four goal deficit at quarter time wasn’t overly concerning. Unfortunately Panton Hill weren’t able to capitalize when they had the advantage in the second term – Parkside were much more effective into the breeze and two goals apiece for the quarter saw them maintain the four goal buffer at half time.

Parkside broke away in the third quarter. Despite plenty of hard work and some good passages of play by the Redbacks, six majors to our one saw the lead blow out by three quarter time. With the wind behind us for the last 30 minutes there was still a hint of optimism and certainly the ball spent a majority of the quarter in our forward half. Unfortunately the damage had already been done and an inaccurate 4.5 (to 2.0) never had us within striking distance – the final margin an unflattering 39 points.

Still, there were some positive signs for the Hill’s to take into next weeks clash. Huffy was back to his best; running hard and picking up plenty of possessions all day, as did ever reliable captain Strongy. Grimmy seems to be enjoying his new role and was very impressive up and down the wing all afternoon. ‘Max’ Power in just his second senior game is really making name for himself and did a magnificent job running with one of Parkside’s best players most of the day, but certainly got his fair share of the ball in the meantime.

Overall a disappointing afternoon for Panton Hill, but another solid week of training and the boys will be pumped to break their duck against Heidelberg West.

RESERVES PERFORMANCE BITTERLY DISAPPOINTING

Parkside: 14.14-98
Panton Hill: 5.2-32

Goal Kickers: D. Belcher 2, B. Hathaway, M. Paterson, C. Tanti
Best Players: G. Wise, C. Tanti, L. Walsh, A. Miller, B. Hathaway, A. Flanagan

Saturday’s match had been spoken about throughout the week as an opportunity for the reserves team to prove that they are not simply making up the numbers in the competition. The playing lists are relatively evenly matched on paper, the match was to be a real arm wrestle. During the early part of the game, this appeared to be the case.

A couple of quick goals to Daniel Belcher gave the Hills some confidence that they could be competitive, and this was reflected by a second quarter that was played out mostly in the middle of the ground, as genuine scoring opportunities became a rarity. Parkside broke through very easily soon after the main break and the Redback players seemed to immediately drop their heads. Needless to say Parkside ran away with a painfully easy win.

Chris Tanti continued to show improvement and worked tirelessly in the ruck, whilst Grenville Wise was again best on ground, showing courage and hard work playing on the ball. Congratulations to first-gamer Blair Hathaway, who saw a lot of the ball, and kicked a goal to be one of few solid contributors on the day, along with Lucas Walsh, Andy Miller and Allan Flanagan.

Reserves Coach John Manzoney was clearly upset by his team’s performance and had little to say after the game, other than the fact that he was ‘shattered.’ This sentiment was no doubt shared by the players who were very quiet in the rooms after the game, no doubt searching for answers as to how the game got away from them so easily. The Hills will be looking to correct their mistakes against Heidelberg West (away) on Saturday.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 3: Golden opportunity let slip

Panton Hill: 17.12-114
Mernda: 19.17-131

Goal Kickers: R. Box, G. Oakley, N. Grimshaw

Once again the Hills got off to a solid start, but this week they were really able to make it show on the scoreboard. The Redbacks were winning the ball at the centre bounces and moving the ball very efficiently into the forward line. By quarter time they had established a 5 goal lead and were looking the goods. It was much more even contest in the second with Mernda pegging back a few but the boys steadied and maintained their 5 goal buffer at the big break.

Throughout the 3rd term Mernda gradually reduced the margin to be leading by a point at the final change. Mernda grabbed the ascendancy in the final quarter to run out victors by 17 points.

Pratty worked hard all day and was best on ground while Cisek posted another very solid performance in his second game for the club. Strongy, our one-armed captain was impressive out of the back pocket as was the usual suspect, Will Box.

Coach Ramsay’s focus this season is to do the things within our own control and stay disciplined. Giving away some ten 25 meter penalties was unforgivable in such a close match.

RESERVES TAKE ANOTHER SMALL STEP FORWARD

Panton Hill: 0.1 2.1 3.1 5.3 (33)
Mernda: 6.2 8.4 13.6 22.16 (148)

Goal kickers: Wise 2, Tanti, Anderson, Francis
Best players: Strongman, Carr, Coleman, Wenborn, Francis, Wise

The Panton Hill reserves side were again disappointing on Saturday afternoon, this time against Mernda. However, whilst the result on the scoreboard was again very deflating for the Redbacks, this week was an improvement on the first two games of the season. Nonetheless, Coach John Manzoney was clear in delivering a post-match message to the players that a more committed and disciplined four-quarter effort was required if the reserves team is to experience victory any time soon.

Paul Strongman was clearly the best player for the Hills, which was particularly impressive on Strongy’s part as he was still getting over a bug that he fell ill to during the week. The return of Grant Carr to the ruck this week was highly beneficial to the side, as Grant won the majority of the tap-outs in the middle of the ground.

Some highlights of the match included some very good forward pressure work by Grenville Wise, resulting in him bagging two goals, whilst first gamer James Anderson also managed to split the middle, in a promising first-up display.

The reserves side will be travelling to Pitcher Park in Alphington on Saturday to take on the Parkside team. The playing group will need to put in a tough and disciplined effort on the training track this week if they are to get close to victory this week.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 2: Macleod runs away with match

Macleod: 20.23-143
Panton Hill: 10.11-71

Goal Kickers: D. The Hills started well and although there was a three goal difference at the first break the game was well and truly in the balance. In the second quarter we kicked five goals to four and at half time the match was there for the taking. Unfortunately it was Macleod who took it in the second half. They finished full of running and the end result was an unflattering 10+ goal loss.

In his first game for the Hills, Paul Cisek was fantastic all day and Ben Brown’s best-on-ground display really held the back line together. Unfortunately the particularly hard ground took its toll and Brad Chircop broke his ankle and White-snake his finger.

Now with two of the competition heavy weights out of the way, the boys are gearing themselves up for some wins over the coming weeks.

RESERVES PROMISING EARLY

Macleod: 20.20-140
Panton Hill: 2.8-20

Goal Kickers: M. Unlike last week the Hills remained hard at the footy in the second quarter, however were unable to convert opportunities. This trend continued and by half time the skill and fitness levels of the Macleod team had really started to show as they took control of the game.

To the credit of the Redbacks side, who played with a lot more passion this week, there were no signs of giving up, as the third quarter was played with plenty of desperation. To their credit, the Macleod team were able to change gears in the final term and run away from the Hills too easily for a percentage-boosting win.

It was great to see first game players Tim Power, Matthew Peck, and Simon Jones getting involved in the match. All three players showed that they are capable and committed players who we look forward to seeing much more of throughout the year.

Grenville Wise was judged best afield for the Hills in his second match since June of 2007, whilst Reserves assistant coach Simon Shell came out of retirement to lead a depleted ruck section, and proved to be an impressive contributor.

Throughout the match the Hills battled with warm conditions and the very hard Macleod home ground and unfortunately reserves Captain Ty Dummett, back from a hamstring injury, rolled his ankle and sat out the remainder of the game. Ben Anderson was also claimed by the Panton Hill curse with an apparent knee injury. Other niggles from the match may see numbers further reduced at training this week with all players keen to be fit to redeem themselves against Mernda at home on Saturday.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

Round 1: Disappointing

Panton Hill: 10.8-68
Watsonia: 19.13-127

Goals Kickers: D. Mc Auliffe

With the usual excitement and optimism that surrounds the start of any footy season, the players went into this match with big expectations on themselves despite the 20 goal difference last season. The Hills started reasonably well in the first quarter and were still well within touch at the half. Oaksey was a stand out up to the main break. The second half was a different story as Watsonia began to run all over Panton Hill and the disappointing final score line speaks for itself.

The ever reliable Vice-captain Will Box put in a best-on-ground performance across the half-back line and through the centre. And Christian Cummings continued his impressive pre-season form and was very solid in the back line.

Although this was some what of a reality check, post-match Gary Ramsay spoke about the exciting challenges ahead that would see the team develop and improve. This week the boys will be focusing on their strengths and look to iron out some of the weaknesses when they come up against last years grand finalists in Macleod.

RESERVES DEALT HARSH LESSON IN COMPLACENCY

Panton Hill: 4.3-27
Watsonia: 17.18-120

Goal Kickers: T. Beattie, W. Wenborn, D. Goody, B. Trim
Best Players: D. Goody, M. Birthisel, W. Wenborn, M. Cameron, G. Carr, G. Wise

Whilst the score line was all too familiar for the twos, the match was not without promise for new coach John Manzoney. With Andrew “Puffy” Wilson as skipper in Ty Dummett’s absence against Watsonia the Redbacks executed with an overall selfless and spirited enthusiasm that saw them have the majority of the attacking play in the first quarter. However it would appear that the quarter time break served only to fill the Hills players with a misplaced sense of confidence as they led by less than a goal at the first change.

The second quarter was completely dominated by Watsonia, as the red and black team appeared to treat their opponents with complacency, which led to a downfall that saw the side retreat to shades of 2007 including a lack of team structure and discipline. Unfortunately, by the time this reality appeared to sink in during the final quarter, the match was all but over and a seemingly fitter and hungrier Saints team marched away with a strong win.

The clear standout for the Hills was David Goody, who worked tirelessly in the midfield throughout the game for little reward or support after quarter time. Matthew Birthisel was typically solid in a back line that was very much under siege all day. It was also encouraging to see Grenville Wise come out of retirement and return to the club following a career threatening neck injury in June of 2007. Grenville played a solid match and will be looking to return to his form of last season over the coming weeks.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

SUCCESSFUL LAST HIT OUT BEFORE THE REAL THING

The boys migrated south on Saturday afternoon to take on Belgrave in real ‘footy’ conditions. The idea was to trial a few different things and put into place the game plan we had been practicing all pre-season – but obviously, with only a week before the real stuff we were pretty focused on a win too.

Things didn’t get off to a great start; Belgrave had a lot more run and were dominating around the contested ball. By quarter time they were leading by about 4 goals and changes had to be made. New assistant coach Justin Whitcher spent the break re-jigging the kick-outs at both ends of the grounds with amazing effect. When the second quarter got under way we were instantly able to steady the flow of last year’s Yarra Valley grand finalists. The Hills started controlling the ball and moving it up the ground in the fashion Coach Ramsay has been drilling into us since January. Will Box dominated the term taking marks at will (so to speak) and the deficit at half time had been greatly reduced.

The second half was a different story altogether – the game plan really started to click and dominant performances by Daniel Pratt and Ben Strongman, well supported by Simon Gunn and Christian Cummings really swung the game in our favour. Christian was superb and provided much of the drive out of the back half with the added pressure of taking the kick-in’s. Amazingly, the defence only let through 3 goals after quarter time!

The Hill’s finished with plenty of run in the final quarter – a major from Adam Anderson put us in front and some inspirational stuff including a long bomb goal from Ricky Woods provided the 12 point victory and the perfect end to a great pre-season. The only negative was a hamstring injury to Pete Davey who had a great game up forward till that point.

Bring on the 2008 home-and-away season!

Panton Hill: 10 - 11 - 71
Belgrave: 8 - 11 - 59
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!

DRAW AGAINST TURTLES IN FIRST UP 2008 PRACTICE MATCH

Panton Hill headed down the road to the magnificant Eltham College ground to take on the Eltham Collegians in the first practice game on the season on Saturday 15 March. In very hot conditions the Turtles got the early start on the big ground but the Panton Hill side worked their way back into the game to lead in the second half and look like they'd run on with the game. But the heat showed up the boys that haven't trained and the Turtles kicked the last couple of goals to level the game at the final siren - 72 each.

Glenn McAuliffe did a fantastic job at full back on former Panton Hill full forward, now the Turtle coach and full forward John Garrard. He was kept to a single goal for the day. A little tap on the nose by Garrard in the last quarter saw both players leave the ground, McAuliffe with a reddied nose and Garrard with a red card. It was only McAuliffe who was able to return a short time later. Whilst the Redbacks were missing a number of players there were certainly plenty of positive points. Ben Strongman returned to the club after a year overseas in strong fashion as did Pete Davey and Tim Clark. Robbie Parkison looked in fine form in the hot conditions after a stint in the Northern Territory playing footy over summer. Some new faces were also revealed with Paul Cisek from Boronia and Justin Whitcher from Montmorency providing great contributions to the team along with some young new recruits Adam Anderson and Simon Gunn.

On a disappointing note, Chris Cahir ended his day 2 minutes into the game with a broken arm. Chris will be devastated as this is the third time he has sustained a similar serious injury in a pre -season match and he was one of the most fit on the training track this pre-season. We wish Chris a speedy recovery. In the Reserves, the team battled hard all day but the hot conditions really impacted on the guys that hadn't trained. To the credit of all players, they didn't stop trying all day but the Turtles ended with a strong win. Highlights included fantastic ruck work by Grant Carr in his first ever game of football along with some burst into the open by rugby player Kiwi. We look forward to the contributions of all new players over the season.

The next practice game will be against Belgrave on Saturday 29 March (away). Hopefully there will be some rain and Panton Hill's home ground will then be in top condition for the first game of the season against Watsonia on 5 April.
This week's match report from Panton Hill Football Club - The Redbacks!
